Clothing Suggestions

It is wise to wear comfortable footwear with light colored soles on boats. Boat shoes are best, but running or tennis shoes work well too. Please check to see if your shoes provide traction on wet decks. Loss of footing can cause serious injury or a swim. Dark soled shoes leave marks that you will find unpleasant to remove.

Dress comfortably in clothing that does not restrict movement. Shorts, t-shirts, swim wear and polo shirts serve well. Cotton clothing, like jeans are acceptable, but take longer to dry if splashed. Rain gear is optional and very helpful too.

Expect that temperatures will be cooler near the lake, particularly early in the season. Dress in layers that can be shed if temps are agreeable. It is always wise to bring a fleece, sweater or pullover. It is also wise to pack a windbreaker. You can always stow unneeded items, but it you may be uncomfortable otherwise.

The sunshine reflected off the water can double one’s exposure. Be certain to bring a hat, sunglasses, lip balm and sunscreen. We offer some of these items, but plan on supplying your own.

We highly recommend that you pack plenty of water or other non-alcoholic liquids to replenish those lost in the wind and sun.

We recommend that you keep non-essential gear locked in the trunk of your vehicle when you are sailing. Be careful to stow personal items in a safe dry place aboard the boat, especially electronic gear. We require that at least one in your group keep a reliable cell phone in an accessible, waterproof container when sailing. This is for emergency contact between you and Chicago Sailing and you must register that telephone number with the office prior to departure. If weather or other dangers threaten, please call our office at 773 871-7245 to report your situation and position.

Early spring - June
It is always cooler on the lake than on land, sometimes there can be a difference of about 10 - 15 degrees. For this reason it is a very good idea to bring more clothing than less. Layers are a good idea so that if you are too warm you can easily cool down by stripping off a layer or two. A hat, gloves and sometimes long underwear is a good idea. Also if you have some waterproofs or rain gear it would be prudent to take them along.

Summer and Fall
June - September: Chicago is typically sunny and very warm during these months so it is very important that you are protected from the sun. Make sure to take plenty of sunblock and a hat with you. Usually shorts and a t-shirt are all that is required, but is prudent to take a sweater and pants and maybe even a windbreaker in case the the weather turns cooler.
