Outboard Motor Operation

IMPORTANT

A. Be certain that you fully understand motor operation fully before you leave the dock. Ask for staff assistance if you are uncertain or need help.

B. These motors have no neutral or reverse gear. Before starting engine boat should be untied, facing open water. The helmsman must be in a position to steer an unobstructed course.

C. Motor shut down: PUSH THE RED SHUT-DOWN BUTTON to stop the motor. Always be ready to kill the motor to avoid a collision. The dead man clip is for emergency shut down only.

1. Open FUEL FILLER cap on top of engine (leave it clipped to motor). The fuel tank should be full (or nearly so) prior to departing the dock. Top off the fuel tank from a convenient fueling can at the Club (ask a staff member will assist you if are unfamiliar with this procedure). Refasten fuel cap securely.

2. Loosen AIR VENT* (on top of filler cap) counterclockwise one full turn, until it is just loose to the touch.

3. Turning the FUEL SHUT OFF valve* to the “OPEN” position will allow fuel to the carburetor.

4. Set the THROTTLE LEVER to “Start” (adjacent to the lower screw head on engine face plate).

5. Be certain that the red “dead man” switch is clipped under the SHUT DOWN BUTTON, allowing ignition.

6. If the engine is cold, set the CHOKE LEVER to the upper limit of its range. If motor is warm, try starting without the choke.

7. Pull STARTER handle firmly and fully. If the engine fails to start after three pulls, go to step 10.

8. Upon starting, disengage the choke immediately by pushing the lever down to its lower limit.

9. Adjust throttle to a level that provides appropriate propulsion. Throttle should never exceed 3/4 of full range.

10. If the engine fails to start, be certain that you followed steps 1-7 correctly and try again. If it still fails to start advance the throttle ½ inch and pull the starter no more than twice with the engine fully choked.

11. If the engine still fails to start, it is likely flooded. Depress the choke and throttle levers completely and pull cord six times to clear excess fuel from the engine. Let engine rest for 10 minutes and repeat procedures 1-7.

*It is advisable to close these valves when the boat heals over. Remember to open before starting motor.

Please feel free to ask your instructor or check-out person for more information. Remember: THERE ARE NO "BAD" QUESTIONS!
