Congrats to our President Alan Veenstra, and Director Of Operations Graham Sauser, on their respecive victories in the 2017 GLSS Solo Mac Challenge!
The Solo Mac follows the same course as the well known Chicago Yacht Club’s Race to Mackinac, but instead of each boat having multiple crew members, it is just you and your thoughts for 333 miles north from the end of Navy Pier, through the Manitou islands, around Gray’s Reef , and though the Straits of Mackinac to the finish.
Alan raced aboard our Frers 53 “Bumblebee III” and took line honors (first to cross the finish line). Alan has been racing in the solo mac regularly since 1997 when he won the President’s Cup
Graham raced aboard his Beneteau Oceanis 352 “Bangarang” and cinched line honors in his division, along with winning the President’s Cup, a trophy awarded for the fastest first time competitor of the year. Graham ended up beating the elapsed record in his division by over 12 hours! Not bad considering his autopilot broke 12 hours in, eliminating any hopes of rest during the race.
Our staff & friends surprised Graham upon his return with quite the party, he didn’t arrive back in Belmont until after midnight but that didn’t stop us from having a good time!
